BOTTLED WATER

Are you thinking about ordering a bottled water delivery service?  You may want to look at the facts on Bottled Water, before you get that bottled water delivered to your home or office.   Even though many Americans have become concerned about the quality of their tap water, bottled drinking water may not be the answer. Studies have shown that bottled water is not necessarily cleaner or safer than tap water, and that bottled water actually has fewer standards regulating it.  Bottled water only has to meet the standards of regular tap water.

There is a perception that bottled water is "safer than tap water;" however, the standards for bottled drinking water, established by the Food and Drug Administration, are very similar to the standards, set by thye USEPA, for tap water.  In fact, about 25% of bottled water is actually tap water that has been processed and repackaged.

Some of the problems with bottled water include: the inconvenience of having to buy and carry water; the questionable and inconsistent quality of bottled drinking water; the expense; and the environmental effect of the manufacture and disposal of all those plastic bottles.   According to Consumer Reports, bottled water prices average about $.89 for a one-gallon bottle.  At that rate, 750 gallons of bottled water would cost $667.50.

“Microbes, pesticides, and solvents have been detected throughout groundwater supplies, and have subsequently found their way into bottles, regardless of disinfection. A third of the 103 bottled water brands tested in a four-year scientific study by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) contained such contaminants in at least some samples, at levels that exceed state or industry standards.  Chemicals typically used to disinfect water may react unpredictably with substances, adding their own potentially dangerous element as well.” says the March/April 2001 issue of emagazine.

The World Wide Fund for Nature commissioned a 26 page study called “Bottled Water: Understanding a social phenomenon,” in which it reveals:

  • World bottled water market is estimated to be worth $22 billion.

  • Bottled water, although up to 1,000 times the price of tap water, may be no safer, or healthier than tap water.

  • More standards regulate tap water in Europe and the US than bottled water.

  • Every year 1.5 million tons of plastic are used for bottled water and toxic chemicals can be released during the manufacture and disposal of the bottles.
